Renewed Smartphone Inspection Checklist

Tech Treasuries Buying Resource

Use this checklist before ordering a renewed smartphone and immediately after delivery. It is designed for renewed iPhone and Android flagship purchases, where condition, storage, network compatibility and included items can vary between listings.

Before ordering: identity and condition

  • Exact model: confirm the model name, generation, screen size and regional version.
  • Storage: verify the listed capacity matches your needs.
  • Condition label: distinguish renewed, renewed premium and ordinary used condition.
  • Colour: check the selected variant rather than relying only on the main product image.
  • Network status: confirm unlocked status, supported bands, eSIM or physical-SIM requirements.
  • Included items: check whether a cable, adapter, original packaging or other accessory is stated.

Before ordering: support and policy

  • Return window: read the request period, condition requirements and exclusions.
  • Warranty wording: rely only on the warranty explicitly stated on the listing or policy page.
  • Battery standard: do not assume a specific battery-health percentage unless the seller states one.
  • Compatibility: confirm carrier and regional compatibility before checkout.
  • Documentation: save a copy or screenshot of the listing and order confirmation.

On delivery: package and exterior

  • Record the opening: photograph or video the sealed package and unpacking process.
  • Match identifiers: compare the model, storage, colour and serial or IMEI information with the order.
  • Inspect the body: check the frame, back, camera lenses, screen and charging port.
  • Check for lifting or gaps: look for separation around the display or back panel.
  • Buttons and switches: test volume, power, mute or action controls.

Functional checks

  • Display: test brightness, touch response, dead pixels, colour uniformity and burn-in.
  • Cameras: test every lens, autofocus, flash, video and microphone recording.
  • Audio: test speakers, earpiece, microphones and Bluetooth audio.
  • Connectivity: test Wi-Fi, mobile network, Bluetooth, GPS and NFC where supported.
  • Charging: test the port, cable fit and wireless charging where supported.
  • Biometrics: test Face ID, face unlock or fingerprint recognition.
  • Battery: review battery-health information where available and watch for rapid drain or overheating.
  • Reset status: confirm there is no activation lock, account lock or previous-owner profile.

Stop before transferring personal data when

Do not move your accounts, photos or payment information onto the phone if it does not match the listing, shows an activation or account lock, has severe physical damage, overheats abnormally or cannot complete basic functional tests. Preserve the packaging and contact the seller using the order number.
